Where two weeks has taken us

Well, I must admit that in starting this blog two weeks ago it was initially just an “idea”. I had hoped it would get some interest but I never imagined it’d skyrocket so quickly. I thought I’d take a pause to inform you all of where two weeks has taken us. Yes, it’s been two weeks since we released this project and since then we’ve had 2,248 hits to our blog (and counting). That’s about 1,100 per week! Our most active day was actually yesterday where 346 people were checking out what our blog has to offer.

I’m very thrilled to let you all know that our Flickr account has become a very popular spot on the web. Just yesterday freelance new media designer, author, and speaker, Cameron Moll, graciously linked to our typography poster set from his web site. You can expect to have a lot of people beyond the local design community keeping up with your work. We have been gradually adding student work and photos in Flickr over the last few weeks. To date we’ve posted 181 photos. And since starting our Flickr account last week we’ve had 2,150 total views, most of which have come in the last week. Late last week we upgraded to pro so we’ve been able to organize the work well. Currently you’ll find 15 sets ranging from portfolio to typography – and much, much more. We’ve had 15 people add our Flickr account as a “contact” so they can keep up with the great work you all are doing. Some are students others are people from all ends of the world. Likewise we’ve had 22 people mark student work as “favorites” so they can quickly refer back to the outstanding work we’ve been posting online. Currently the most viewed piece is Reina Castellano’s typography poster with 286 total views.

So keep checking back – I’m anxious to see where the upcoming weeks and months take us!

It was a great idea to create these accounts to "show off" how awesome the student work is at valencia. how could anyone expect less with such caring professors? =] Kristy, you were right. "this is grotesque" does attract people. =P

I noticed that students in Jarod Glick's type classes don't have posters in the student gallery - his students have some pretty neat stuff too considering he "forced" us to keep away from illustrative elements in our type posters (in other words, kept it strictly typographical). If you can get a hold of some of the posters from his class, I'd love to see those in the student gallery too =)

I am not surprised by the success of this blog, I think our school has some very dedicated students and faculty, and thats face it we are all internet junkies... put the two together and you have one very populated blog!

Thanks guys. Yes, I realize most of the work you see here is addy or student awards winning. Unfortunately it's hard to archive work from all instructors and there is a request in for instructors to send us copies of work. So if you think you have some top notch work feel free to send it to me in jpg or pdf format (try to keep it less than 1mb). Only send your work that is near or currently "portfolio quality". Sending samples of your work does not guarantee it will be posted in Flickr. Much like your own work, we do want to showcase the best portfolio quality work. So if it's "not there" yet - update us as you have had time to revise and polish off your work. Samples can be sent directly to me via email: akern [at] valenciacc.edu Please be sure to list the titles of work, the course, your instructor's name as well as the semester it was completed. The size should be no more than 2000px x 2000px in size (width/height may vary). Please try to ensure a decent resolution is provided. We look forward to seeing more student work!
