My Most Important Lesson at VCC’'s Graphics Program

mundloscbeforeafter2.jpgArticle and Visual interpretation provided by Claudia Mundlos in Kristy Pennino’s Advanced Graphic Design II course.

Coming from Germany, a country where everything seems to be complicated and difficult, it was a big change to move to the USA, the country of the American Dream, where everything is possible and quite frankly, everything seems to be easy.

Now, the last thing I want to imply here is that Valencia’s Graphic Program is easy. It has taught me though that everything is possible.

Here’s my story: Was my Graphics degree planned? Not at all. The truth is that I needed to find an “inexpensive” college, one where the out of state tuition isn’t just simply killing you, to obtain a visa to stay in the country of my choice. In Germany I had always dreamt of studying design, be it fashion design or graphic design. However, as already mentioned, in a country where everything tends to be complicated, your dreams are often shattered. So I had to keep my feet on the ground and just accept that design was something for highly talented art students.

When I met with the VCC admissions officer to apply for my degree here, she asked me what I was planning to study. Not knowing anything about VCC, I grabbed the list of degrees and browsed through it. I was very surprised to see Graphic Design on the list because in my country you just don’t walk into a school and study Graphic Design. That is something only a chosen few with experience and talent get to do. So I thought, why not? I checked the degree and gave the sheet to the counselor.

Now, the truth is, in my first semester I did not take a single graphic design related class, in fact I didn’t even take a class that I needed at all for this degree. My plan was to leave school and look for a job as soon as my green card situation was in place. Well, needless to say, it took longer than I had planned for that to happen, so in my second semester I gave Graphic Design a try. The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented. In Germany I would have never made it into a Graphic Design program, so I still couldn’t understand how I could just walk in here and start my degree in this field. The other reason why I doubted the degree was because I thought if everyone can study it, it can’t be that good, so why even bother?

Then I walked into my first Graphics class. I will never forget how excited I was. It was real. It was happening. I was officially a Graphic Design student and treated as such. There was talk about design. Talk about how we would all go off after graduation working in the industry. I could not believe I was in the middle of all of this. One of the greatest things VCC has given me is self esteem about my design and my ideas. I have learned that there is something positive about every idea you have. Yes, it can be improved very often, but the constructive criticism and positive feedback you get here is wonderful. It does not limit your creativity; it inspires you to do more. You learn to think bold. You value the world around you and see things with different eyes. In many ways VCC has brought back my creativity from childhood that has been suppressed in my home country with negative talk and limitations. I finally started believing in my forgotten dream again. I am capable; I can do it if I want to. Everyone can walk into VCC and try it. I have to say thank you for giving everyone the opportunity to prove themselves. Thank you for not killing creativity and art in its earliest stages. I have learned that everything can be learned. I have learned that teachers and students alike see, value and believe in you and your art. And isn’t this what art is all about?

once in a while i come across a story i can totally relate to. although it sucks that we had to leave our contries to achieve something, it is great that in some places they are actually willing to open up to us and help us in evey aspect. i swear the best decision i have made in my life right now was to stick around in the states and attend valencia. go vcc!!! =P great images and story. =]

I have learned that there is something positive about every idea you have. I chose this excerpt because I believe that out of something bad, comes something good. we are our own worst critic and sometimes it is easy to believe that our work is not good enough. Im sure everyone has been in this position at one time or another. I just try to work as hard and as dilligently as possible and hope for the best.

"The other reason why I doubted the degree was because I thought if everyone can study it, it can’t be that good, so why even bother?" I feel like this sentence describes how I feel about graphic design. I mean it is not a job title that someone can just learn and be great at it, such as being a teacher, doctor, or accountant. No, graphic design is about having a gift and having a eye for color and style. The only way of being successful is being creative. Also the story is really inspiring and makes me feel lucky to live in America.

"I have learned that teachers and students alike see, value and believe in you and your art." This is a valuable excerpt because it how we will learn in VCC's GD program. When I heard that my artwork would be shared with and critiqued by my fellow classmates and not just my teacher, I had a heart attack. I am used to the linear learning template of teacher to student. To me, putting my education in the hands of others felt like one of those bad dreams where you are walking around naked. As I journey this path, I can see how having the input of the many rather than just the one teacher will allow me to grow and network even more. It is good to get confidence from a fellow student that this method of group share and critique is done well and is helpful.

I choose the first quote because I living it right now!! I just had two classes and I'm already excited to see what the future hold!! In my first class...when the the professor talked about what we're going to do in the class and what we'll do in future classes she made me feel like I made the correct decision! Sometimes you can be your worst enemy!! This happens to me all the time. I tend to be harsh on myself and I feel great lack of confidence when it comes to my work, even when people tell me they like my work.

"The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented." I think this statement is so universal. We are all scared and nervous to throw ourselves into the world, and that's why the classroom is so vital to our confidence. I know that I have felt nervous to get into a program that tests my ability, nervous to show everyone what I can (or can't) do.

I walked into my first Graphics class. I will never forget how excited I was. I feel the same way I'm just starting out in this program and I very excited, so excited that I look foward to attending my next class, but unlike Claudia, for the longest I did not know what I wanted to do with my life, then one day I realized I was good at drawing and wanted to do something related to Art for a living, I did some research and found that graphic design was the best fit for me.

Ms. Mundlos captivates her readers by sharing her plight with such honesty. She has made me realize that being born and raised in the USA programs us to take much for granted. She has rejuvenated my appreciation for the beauty of learning and she has inspired me to attempt bold, creative thinking, regardless of proven talent.

"Was my Graphics degree planned? Not at all" Not in one second of my high school or even college years did I think I was going to end up taking graphic design classes, considering my lack of knowledge of the field and my inclination toward more hands on types of art However here I am fresh Valencia Graduate from the Studio Art A.A. degree program now enrolled in the Graphics Design program It was only until I started digging more into photography and the current job requirements for it, that I realized I could not limit myself from not knowing how to. In such a competitive world that we live in is only wise to know more, for that can only help you get wherever you wish to be

"I gave Graphic Design a try" One of the most touching aspects of this story is how Ms. Mundlos did not start out knowing that this is what she wanted to do, nor did she begin the program because she lived, breathed, loved design. Yet, she found herself here in this program and, lo and behold, found she loved it and had a voice. It's an example of how we all come here for different motivations and anxieties. Yet hopefully, we will all come out as positive and empowered as Ms. Mundlos.

Once again another reminder how lucky we are to be in the US. It's stories like these that put things into perspective. It just goes to show, if you want something bad enough you can accomplish it. My promise to myself this semester is to stay focused. There are so many people in the world who would love the opportunities that we enjoy here in the states. Great article, when I get frustrated this semester (which I'm sure I will!) I will have to come back to it as inspiration.

The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented. This statement speaks to me. I am in the graphics program because I am a Marketing Coordinator and wish to improve my graphic skills and artistic eye. My main fear of this program is how my designs will compare to others. This story is inspirational. Claudia Mundlos answers that anything can be taught and improved upon and that is what I am looking for in the graphics program. I may not be as talented as anyone else just starting the program but I can learn to improve my skills and become just as good.

I think it is fascinating how somethings tend to work them selves out. Had it not been for a 2nd semester and the delay on the green card, Claudia would not have pursued her dream of graphic design. Good for her!

"Everything is possible" I have found myself discovering this creative relief as well in the US.. where back in my country the creative mind was limited. It is easy for one to feel lost in this world.. but don't be!! sooo many opportunities are given to you to hold. They dont just happen, you have to go after them. and when they are right in front of you! dont loose time! This should be an encouragement to all to pursue their goals in life.

First off, I loved this article. It was very inspirational, and I'm happy the author was able to achieve her dream :) "Then I walked into my first Graphics class. I will never forget how excited I was. It was real. It was happening. I was officially a Graphic Design student and treated as such." I can relate to this excerpt - I had the same feeling and excitement when walking into my first graphics class during my second semester (I took only academics in my first to get them out of the way). I was excited to know it was finally happening; something I had been planning for and dreaming about for so long. I'm ready to learn, practice, and most of all, design. Art makes me feel really good. I constantly surround myself around it and I look forward to it every single day :)

"I have learned that everything can be learned." Deciding to go back to school and earn a Graphic Design certificate is very daunting. I've never considered myself a "creative" person although others tell me that I am. I am always terrified that I just won't get it. Although I may have a passion for graphic design, I never was secure in the fact that I would be able to accomplish my goal of becoming familiar with the applications and doing well. It's comforting to know that I am not the only one who feels this way and that if I have the drive, I will succeed.

Yes people get scared, but everyone shouldn’t look at things so negative it should be more of a drive. You could be very talented and not even know it. So why should you give up on something you haven’t even tried yet, that doesn’t make any sense. I think everything and everyone should be given a chance. Obviously this country is very different from Germany, people look for talent in all kinds of places, always looking for something new.

"The other reason why I doubted the degree was because I thought if everyone can study it, it cant be that good, so why even bother?" I use to think like is as well. I thought if everyone is doing it, its easy, or you cant be great at it because so much people are doing it. But it takes a different type of person to want to be greater, to strive to be the best at something even if so many people are doing it. Some majors/ jobs it may be hard to stand out, but once you dont settle for average, you can go far.

“VCC has brought back my creativity from childhood” My story isn’t quite as extreme, but I can relate. I have always had a creative drive and I was a very creative child. As I got older, my priorities changed and I drifted away from the things I used to enjoy. Although returning to school meant stepping out of my comfort zone, I think ultimately going back to my passion will be worth it. It will be rewarding to have my creative outlet also be my career.

"Then I walked into my first Graphics class. I will never forget how excited I was." I choose this excerpt because when I started out getting experience in my field I felt the same exact way. Several years ago I did this one internship at a television station and the first second that I had walked into one of the studios I immediately fell in love with it and anything involving TV and video production. Ever since then I have stuck to it and pursued it ever since. When I first started college I wanted to major in Computer Science, but I had much trouble understanding anything when it came to higher level math and computer programming. Once I changed my degree to television and video production I never looked back!!

"Thank you for not killing creativity and art in its earliest stages." While I understand that creativity comes from all around and there is no wrong answers in life etc etc. but the creative process isn't the major part of graphic design but execution of said Idea. I think that is where alot of artists get offended, I'm not commenting on your idea but if you're execution isn't on then that is the success or failure of the piece that I'll be talking about in critiques.

"a country where everything seems to be complicated and difficult, it was a big change to move to the USA, the country of the American Dream, where everything is possible and quite frankly, everything seems to be easy." I come from France and it is also a country where everything is complicated. It is even more horrible than that, over there everything is meant to be complicated. If it is easy for you there is a problem, you didn't understant correctly or you did something wrong. Here, in the USA, they give you a chance to prove what you are capable of. People, teachers make you believe in yourself, they really do think that everybody is able to do something great, that if you work hard you will succeed in what you want.

I also come a different country, maybe not as drastic as Germany or Russia but in Dominican Republic if you don't have economic or political status you will most likely not get very far no matter how good you are. In this country all you need is drive and passion, that's it. Money is not even an issue, there's all kinds of scholarships, grants, jobs, you name it. "You value the world around you and see things with different eyes", in this industry you have to be creative and see something in nothing. I think keeping a journal is so important because you need to capture your ideas before you forget about them. "I have learned that everything can be learned", couldn't agree with you more there.

“That is something only a chosen few with experience and talent get to do.” I am from Switzerland myself and the situation there is similar. There you have to be an artist to even have a chance at doing something like this. Here in the US there is a more general approach to this and many other creative fields. This allows me to try out a career that would be very difficult pursue in Switzerland. It was encouraging to read that given enough effort, motivation and enthusiasm, one can enjoy success in graphic design. Even if one thinks at the outset of not having the talent to do it.

"I can do it if I want to." This statement is a big part of life we see ourselves as we can't do something because of some reason or another. What it boils down to is that we must not truly be passionate or have the desire to work hard and put ourselves on the line to take the risks it takes or the discomfort to face our fears and learn from mistakes, to push to our goals we fall short of our greatness. This ultimately will make us stronger and more fulfilled individuals.

"You learn to think bold. You value the world around you and see things with different eyes." I know this is two lines but I feel very strongly about their connection. The art and design classes I will take will help me find inspiration in ways that were not fulfilled by Statistics courses and Accounting. There really is more to a major than how much money is associated with it. Personally, I feel that having a career that stimulates your creativity and forces you to find inspiration in the world around you is much more satisfying than having a cubicle job where you shuffle numbers from one excel spreadsheet to another. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy that there are people to fill those non-artistic careers, because our society could not survive without them, it just isn't for me.

I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented. THis feeling here is very much related to me as I have gone through the same thing in my country. I had taken the examination in Jamaica 2 times before and I have failed it both times. So, yes, I too was scared of disappointing myself again that is why I have not signed up for graphic classes any at all. Instead I have chosen to go into a different major. The reason I am even now in this class is because I needed the credits to satisfy my international student quota. So I thought I might as well give graphic design a try and so here I am and hope I will enjoy this class.

This quote totally describes me in how i was amazed by not only my first high school design class but my first college one too. College class is a lot more into it then high school graphic class had been but it makes my passion for this grow stronger as i learn more and more. This passage showed me that things are accomplishable even if you think they are not. This man came from a place where most people dont get to do what they dream for unlike here, america, where we can do what ever we choose and we can try as many time at it as we please. Most people dont understand how lucky they are just being able to live here. This passage shows how one persons dream can come reality.

"One of the greatest things VCC has given me is self esteem about my design and my ideas. I have learned that there is something positive about every idea you have." One of the things that bother me about this industry is that people will CONSTANTLY talk about your work, and critiquing every nook and cranny and it will literally make you cry if your not ready. Reading this is giving me high hopes of not only learning how to handle that kind of situation, but too also appreciate what me and every one in my class has to say about what I did.

"I have learned that teachers and students alike see, value and believe in you and your art. And isn’t this what art is all about" -I have to agree. The teachers and for the most part, students at VCC are very helpful and provide a lot of vital information that is definitely used for the real-world. Criticism comes into great play here at VCC. Criticism from the teachers and students prepare "us" for public speaking, presentations, and "selling" a product.

Yes, it can be improved very often, but the constructive criticism and positive feedback you get here is wonderful. It does not limit your creativity; it inspires you to do more. Why I chose this and reaction is! Ideas are very important, and how people thing is good to analyze and there creativity should not be put down. Because you get a sense of what makes please think, feel, and buy a product.

This is exactly what I am here to do, expand my creativity, learn new skills and improve my designs. If feedback is what it takes to achieve this than don't hold back, from my experience sometimes the hardest thing to hear is what drives you to change.

Through high school i had planned to be a forensic scientist but after the first year i just lost interest in it. I was in another program for two semester in VCC, but i was not very into it. It is a really hard decision for me to give up some credit hours that i have learned and switched over to a brand new course. Well, that is what i love to do and what i am capable to do, i know that i can do better on Graphic design with all of my potential abilities. We'll see.

" I have to say thank you for giving everyone the opportunity to prove themselves. Thank you for not killing creativity and art in its earliest stages." Getting a chance to prove yourself is something that usually in this industry can be very difficult but its great that there are different opportunities to do so, and that you can find out where you can network with people with out as much trouble and research.

It has taught me though that everything is possible. This excerpt is in line with the classical, "if there's a will, there's a way." If you are passionate about something and willing to put the time and effort in, yeah I agree that everything is possible. Sometimes you stumble onto what your true passion is, just don't cheat yourself and let it slip away by not putting in the effort.

"The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented." This really hit home for me. I've never thought that I was very artistic. I mean, I love to draw, create posters, anything. I'm always making something. But I never thought that I could do anything with it. Well, a couple months ago my boss asked me to make a website for the company. I started to draw things out and design the page, and I absolutely loved it. When I showed it to a friend of mine, he suggested that I do graphic design. I had always thought that you had to be an amazing artist in order to do graphic design. I always doubt myself, and I'm very insecure about anything I do creatively. But I was very proud of the website I made with all the graphics, and I was getting good feedback. That finally gave me the confidence to get into graphic design. So far, I absolutely love all my classes, and I find myself reading and researching it in my free time. For fun! I know, sounds dorky, but I'm very excited about all the possibilities that I have just recently discovered.

I have learned that everything can be learned. An exchange student who came here for a visa and ends up learning something she wanted to do most of her life inspires me do work harder for what I want, not many people get the chance we do. It can be a little overwhelming trying to learn many new things at one time, but everything can be learned with time and practice.

That is something only a chosen few with experience and talent get to do. During my first week in the Graphic Design Essentials class, I felt exactly the same way. I thought that I didn't belong in there and that Graphic Design was just not meant for me. After that week was over, I made the decision of sticking around and to follow my dreams no matter how hard I have to work to make them a reality.

The reason why I hadn't started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented. There is no doubt that we all waiver in our ability to perform. New to Graphic Design and formal art classes in general I am very much intimidated. I am learning to look, think and create in entirely different terms than I've been taught my entire life. Although I am very nervous, I am just as excited to be in such a position. The challenge is just beginning but I know the reward will be beyond just in comparision.

"I have learned that everything can be learned." I think this is a significant point she makes, because it encompasses everything from hard work to persistence. Obviously, when reading Claudia's story she didn't (and doesn't) lack in hard work and certainly doesn't lack in persistence. However, even more than hard work and persistence, by saying "I have learned that everything can be learned" she's providing inspiration to the person who may not be the most naturally talented designer, but has the passion and drive to succeed. It provides the perfect antithesis to some of the examples used by Kristy Pennino to illustrate the title of her recent post, "Five Signs You Should Not Major in Graphic Design".

"Coming from Germany, a country where everything seems to be complicated and difficult, it was a big change to move to the USA, the country of the American Dream, where everything is possible and quite frankly, everything seems to be easy." This is my very first time in a Valencia styled Graphic Design course. And so far have learned quite a deal of the industry that i have not in previous years of a artist. This is a much more complicated course than i had originally thought about. But i have learned more and more everyday from the teacher than anyone else i knew in previous courses of Elementary, Middle, and High School leveled based art class. I previously was in the graphic design course at Mid Florida Tech. And have learned only a handful of the techniques i needed to know for the graphic design industry. So many of the students went on to work in a real graphic design industry which required much skill and knowledge about all art programs. Graphic Design is a major part of my every day career. And learning about Photoshop and other graphic and artistic program will help in later years to come. Just starting in Lesson one i have become a better artist and understood what i needed to know about anything related to the program itself.

I have learned that everything can be learned This stood out to me. I believe with technology now a days and all the resources that are provided to us that we have the opportunity to learn anything and everything that we want. We defintely have to have the interest though to be able to learn anything. I mean really learn something. My most important lesson at VCC’s graphics program “In many ways VCC has brought back my creativity from childhood that has been suppressed in my home country with negative talk and limitations.” I understand what this person is going threw because life just sort of beats you down after a while and it is funny how a school can make you creative again. Immigration, work, everyday life just makes you feel un inspired and makes. Valencia made it easy to get back into the groove. That is why I chose this school.

I agree that it is important to see your work not only through your own eyes but also through the eyes of others because ultimately, its the "others" opinions that make all the difference in this industry. Graphics and design have no boundaries, so why is it that someone is setting them? It makes you wonder how many possible doctors are out there if he/she were just given the chance and opportunity. "Thank you for not killing creativity and art in its earliest stages." I love this excerpt!! I feel that when we are young, everyones favorite subject is art. It's the one time for children to get away from the headache of the other classes and express their creative side. However, when only the best children in the class get their work hung up and the others are hardly recognized, it turns this excitement into almost embarrassment. As Picasso once said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." I feel like when we move on to college it's almost like those initial art stages again. Some colleges give everyone that opportunity to shine and some only chose the students with excellent backgrounds. And like Claudia has pointed out, Valencia gives students that opportunity.

The reason I chose this excerpt was because that is how I have thought of most majors that sound the least bit interesting. It's for the people who have been doing that their whole lives. “The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented.” The statement holds true for myself as well, to some degree. For myself, I wasn’t waiting to start my degree (well, after a brief stint at art school working towards a photography major I wound up here) but rather being just disappointed in myself in general. I am my own worst critic and being put back into a classroom setting, I was worried that I would let myself down and my creativity and talent would fail me. But the more time I gave myself to realize that this is what I want to be doing, it doesn’t matter what happens from here. I can not disappoint myself if I’m doing what I want to do.

No matter how crazy something may sound or look, whether one fells at it or not, there is always something new to be discovered from every idea that floats in our heads. Well for me I've always liked the arts, whether I was doing something else or not I've always fell into that category. I'm new to this program and will make sure to get the most out of it!

“The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented.” This is completely relatable. Never have I felt so unsure or indesisive in the graphics arts programs and essentials. But the drive I carry to learn more, is whats keeping me in the ring. I've loved design, and art ever since I got my hands in it. I know I may not know the software, or all of the processes in design, I know I have a gift, and the will to keep learning. You can't be dissapointed in yourself if you know you can be whatever it is that you want.

"I have learned that teachers and students alike see, value and believe in you and your art. And isn’t this what art is all about?" That would be sort of weird wouldn't it? If the teacher didn't believe in you and your work, that would be down-right depressing.

"Then I walked into my first Graphics class. I will never forget how excited I was. It was real. It was happening. I was officially a Graphic Design student and treated as such. There was talk about design. Talk about how we would all go off after graduation working in the industry. I could not believe I was in the middle of all of this. One of the greatest things VCC has given me is self esteem about my design and my ideas." I COMPLETELY identify with this paragraph!! It has taken me so long to get to this point- everytime I switched a major, Graphic Design was always in the back of my head, but I never thought I would have any luck with it. I still don't at this point, but I sure am excited to give it a try....just the fact that I get so excited to read the syllabus and go to the art store and go to class must be a good sign.......

"Coming from Germany, a country where everything seems to be complicated and difficult, it was a big change to move to the USA, the country of the American Dream, where everything is possible and quite frankly, everything seems to be easy." Interesting quote. Since I was born in New York and lived in New York City and now Florida I obviously have no experience with any other country but America. I can't imagine what it must be like to be so limited in your life and you chances/ opportunities. As far as I know Germany isn't even one of the bad countries to end up living in. Imagine being born in Korea or Angola. The realization that this world is so big, and I have seen so little of it is quite humbling. I am interested in what other people believe of America, our opportunities, health care, jobs, careers, retirement funds, etc. It must be incredible, and I take it all for granted every single d@mn day. Time to sit down and thank somebody for this once in a lifetime(literally) opportunity at life as an American citizen!

'I have learned that everything can be learned.' You can learn every program there is to graphic design, but you cannot create a piece of artwork unless you put thought, creativity, and heart into it. Anyone can put lines on a paper but it takes an artist to make those lines into something beautiful.

"One of the greatest things VCC has given me is self esteem about my design and my ideas. I have learned that there is something positive about every idea you have. Yes, it can be improved very often, but the constructive criticism and positive feedback you get here is wonderful." I can honestly say that my experience here at Valencia has been one of a kind. Every one of my professors have their imprint on me. They're kind, encouraging and the fact that they'll remember your name is amazing in my book! It's a nice feeling coming to class knowing that there are people around who want you to succeed and improve yourself. I'm glad that other people can appreciate this amazing school too.

"Everyone can walk into VCC and try it." It sounds like an advertisement to me but, at the risk of sounding cheesy again, I think this is great. I won't claim to know much about Germans but I've met enough of them to know they can be a tough crowd, so I definitely sympathize with this person. Plus, we've all dealt with negativity everywhere we go (some more directly than others) but reading things like this and knowing VCC has helped make things happen for others reaffirms my decision to come here.

"The other reason why I doubted the degree was because I thought if everyone can study it, it can't be that good, so why even bother?" I think this line is important because I am sure that many of us in the program have at once had this thought. Truly, the opportunity to study graphics design is accesible to anybody who wants to study it. Yes, it is true that even with the opportunity, without the passion to go along with it, the degree is no good. But, I also believe that this is what is so great about the graphics design degree. In my mind, you can study to be a doctor and you can be a success as long as you have the knowledge and go through the motions to get to that point regardless of whether you like what you are doing or not. But, with design your not going anywhere unless you love it. So the degree is accessible and it is awesome that we live in a society where opportunity is presented before us, but we can't expect to get anywhere unless we as designer have a passion for what we are doing. Othereise, yea, the degree is no good if anyone who is anyone, love it or hate it, can become a designer.

"I have learned that everything can be learned." I can relate to this post because I too was afraid of being disappointed in myself. I have always considered myself to be a talented artist but I have never tried to create anything on a computer before and I was worried that my lack of computer knowledge would hurt me when it came to graphic design. But, only 2 weeks into the semester, I already feel more confident in my abilities. I have learned so much already and I look forward to continuing to progress in the course and improve my skills.

"the country of the American dream"The American dream; everything is possible and easy. In a way that is true, as soon as I moved here from Peru I noticed that was true. Because back then we focused on studying and discipline, while here from the very beginning they make us focus on what we want to do when we grow up. This is the difference between the US and a lot of other countries. I’m not saying everything is possible here, since everyone is focusing on getting were their talent calls them instead of were their text books binds them then that saying could be true.

"I was very surprised to see Graphic Design on the list because in my country you just don’t walk into a school and study Graphic Design. That is something only a chosen few with experience and talent get to do." Sometimes we forget that the US makes so many opportunities available to students, and that if we lived in other places perhaps we wouldn't have the opportunity to do what we love-graphic design.

"The other reason why I doubted the degree was because I thought if everyone can study it, it can’t be that good, so why even bother?" Graphic Design is versatile enough for a lot of people to achieve a degree in it. But there is a certain artistic talent that is required that everyone does not have.

Now, the truth is, in my first semester I did not take a single graphic design related class, in fact I didn’t even take a class that I needed at all for this degree. I can relate to this article as well since I am originally from Venezuela, but I have travel a lot, and most of the places where I have been I haven’t had the opportunities that I find in Valencia College. I even try to study different careers and I didn’t felt as I belong there. Truth is this is my first semester studying Graphic design and even though I have already do some little work with some of the programs that we will see in this course most of them are new for me so I believe this will be a good experience for me.

The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented. I can relate to this statement because I am now in my second year at VCC and for my entirer first year was scared to take my first graphics class because I felt highly untalented and that I would be lost. But now only a few weeks into my first graphics class I feel comfortable and at ease.

I am capable; I can do it if I want to. This sentence motivates me. People have said that I'll never do any good things in my life. I know that's a lie, because "I am capable; I can do it if I want to." It's courage like this one that gets me out of bed 4 days a week to go to school and attend every one of my classes.

Besides this story being inspirational, i found this line important: "Everyone can walk into VCC and try it." I personally think that this is awsome, that some place such as a community college is willing to give students this oportunity to give it a try with no hassles. I know at UCF you have to apply for the program and aren't necessarly garenteed to get in (slightly worried for myself), so i think this is awsome.

"It was real. It was happening. I was officially a Graphic Design student and treated as such." We all have our own stories of where we come from and how tough things have gotten for us, and I like many others, am no different. Several years went by before I found myself back in school. It was something I had wanted for a long time and worked at really hard to obtain. However, after I finally got back to school I quickly reminded myself that the hard work has only begun. This semester I am finally taking classes that are necessary for my major and the more that I learn from them the more confident I am that I have chosen the right field for myself. I am excited with the possibilities that await me at every turn and appreciate Valencia for preparing me for the next chapter of my life.

"I have learned that everything can be learned." This thought is really moving. I think it allows everyone to feel that you don't have to start as brilliant artist, but you if you want it enough, it can become a reality. It's also great that we can have the support of our teachers and fellow students.

The reason why I hadn’t started to this point was because I was so scared of being disappointed at myself, for not being highly talented. This sentence relates to me just because I took forever to get back into school, and honestly i love graphic design and graphic technology, but a lot of work to get as good as I hope. But this is just the beginning.

“In many ways VCC has brought back my creativity from childhood that has been suppressed in my home country with negative talk and limitations.” This line hits close to home. So many people are quick to judge you because you happen to like applying imagination; they tell you it’s not going to take you anywhere. This type of thinking can make anyone, not set in their artistic ways, shelve their passion away. This blog is an inspiration for me and hopefully it is to others who are so reluctant to follow their dreams.

'It does not limit your creativity; it inspires you to do more. You learn to think bold. You value the world around you and see things with different eyes.' I think this captures what creativity comes from, taking your ideas, doing more with them, and taking everything in.

"I am capable; I can do it if I want to." Setting your mind to doing something, even as challenging as graphics design where your offering a service to the clients liking, if you set your heart and goals to achieving it, the dream can definately be pulled off. Nicely put blog, a great story. Learning and growing intellectually and creatively is what I am here for and glad that it is working out.

"I am capable; I can do it if I want to." This is a true statement for everyone, though this is one that is difficult to believe for most. Thoughts control all actions, so if you thoughts lead you to believe you can do anything you want, you really can. I agree with this statement though sometimes its hard for me to think this way, but I know if I believe it it'll be true.

Thank you for not killing creativity and art in its earliest stages. I have learned that everything can be learned. I have learned that teachers and students alike see, value and believe in you and your art. And isn’t this what art is all about? i chose this passage because it was very touching . i will never take going to a community college for granted after this for the sake of that some people arent even allowed to study art period and here i can study it and have it be taken seriously

This is a great article. I think that everyone who is thinking about attending this great community college should read this. It is inspiring to many of those who feel that they are not set out for college or those who feel skeptical about entering a certain field. Your story can only do positive things for others and help others to realize that their dreams can come true too. I like how you were the one to act on what you wanted to accomplish in your life which makes you the one responsible for making your dream come true. You inspired me to continue on in my dream in pursuing the graphic design industry because myself thought that I might not be artistic enough. Your artwork that I saw got me pumped up and excited about graphic design. Keep doing what you are doing and I wish you the best of luck.

Being a newbie to graphic design in general, the title of this article took me hook, line, and sinker. Though I'm sure I am over-dramatizing the situation, being 20 and grandma when it comes to technology, I too feel as if I'm from another country. Or at least mentally so. This article helped me calm down my mind more than anything. Especially since I've already finished my degree and am just now getting into the design part of it. Genuinely makes me look forward to the rest of the semester. I'm a huge fan of this amazing school, so I'm happy to be less intimidated walking into it every monday and wednesday at 6pm. I can/will do this. After all, "anything is possible."

This blog post was very inspiring and definitely made me more excited to complete my degree in this college. I love how we now have the opportunity to complete our degree and take the classes that are important. We start by learning the basics of photoshop and any design program and then to become amazing designers. The industry is so open and pushing forward is necessary when it comes to being a designer. There are no limitations to your dreams. I agree with your statement about what art is all about. You have to believe in yourself and your art that is still creative. Everyone has the chance to show the world their real personality. This post was a really good post and thank you for sharing your story with the world.

Returning to school after 25 years and going with the sole purpose of a late-in-life second career, I am trying to read anything that may help me succeed. Reading the title, I truly thought I would learn one specific lesson I should hone in on. I got so much more. Confidence. Without realizing it, I have always loved graphic design but it took a chance opportunity to DO it for my company for me to realize I was capable of it. Maybe not art for art's sake but the conveying of information through billboards, posters and other advertising. Although I may not be from another country, I too believed that a career in Graphic Design was reserved for the elite, the artists. This article has helped me feel more comfortable that there are others, like me, who may be starting from the ground floor. Others that have not been in art class and clubs for years but still have a passion and desire to create. Thanks for that.

It is ironic to stumble upon this blog post after having a conversation about education with a friend over coffee. We talked about going to Germany for MFA and design programs because we heard they offer free school and that Germany is just a better country in general. I suppose this is reformation that grass is always greener else where. I'm learning that having a community that supports artistic growth is vital. Schools are great at providing these communities along with the guidance, education, and challenges needed to grow. It's so great that you were able to find confidence and believe in yourself as an artist. It is so great that Valencia could help you achieve that. Valencia's use of TVAC that pushes us to think critical is key to achieving a higher level. I am glad to be apart of a college that not only supports us but challenges us to use higher level reasoning. Graphic Design was a dream for me too and part of achieving it was believing it was possible. Valencia is a great way to get a great and affordable education and be apart of a community of like minded artists.

I really enjoyed your post. I am actually a international student as well so I can relate in a way. I have taken on Graphic Design with little to no understanding. And it has worried me a little bit because of the short Summer term, and full time classes. It is the first week of my first term in this degree and I am already feeling a little overwhelmed. listening to all my professors talk about deadlines and getting things done I feel like I have a never ending homework to do list already. However reading your post has put me at ease to some extent. I am really looking forward to being creative and learning more about this degree. Thank you for sharing your story with us, it really is nice being reassured about my decision to take this degree on.

I really like your post! I feel almost the same way, I'm from Colombia and always dreamed about studying Graphic Design. When I came to United States I could not due right away because I was single mother of two beautiful daughters and expend almost 10 years working in jobs that I don't really like it, so I decided to go to Valencia College and start my classes. For me it was not easy because I had to take English classes, now that I finished my English classes Im very excited because I started my art classes which I don't have any knowledge but I know that I can do it and I will do my best!
