The New and Improved Valencia Graphics web site

vcc-graphics-site.jpgIt’s exciting to announce the new and improved web site for Valencia’s Graphics Technology Program. The new web site provides a wealth of information about the program, which is useful for students, faculty and even creative professionals who might be looking to hire one of our graduates. You’ll find a lot of new features on the web site, to include an RSS Feed from this blog, our flickr account, and the neverending list of bookmarks in blinklist. You’ll even find a feed from Authentic Jobs, which always seems to have great opportunities for creative and web/interactive professionals. Just visit the site – and you’ll find there’s no excuse why you can’t stay current with the latest events within Valencia’s graphics program.

A BIG thanks…

Now this new web site would not be possible with out a lot of hard work from two of our students, Jason Ellison & Efrain Lugo. Both Jason and Efrain showed an interest and enthusiasm to participate in this endeavor just prior to the last summer semester and with a lot of hard work and persistence the site is finally complete. Jason, who was the primary designer on the project, was tortured working through numerous concepts until we reached this one that is a great creative representation for our program. So apology for being nit picky but now that the site is finished – I think we all agree it was worth it! Efrain is the html/css coding guru who helped make the ideas Jason created functional. This obviously did not come without a lot of testing and experimenting beyond what he’s been taught in a classroom environment. Efrain has spent numerous hours on end coding this site and has also went through a ton of revisions along the way. So I’ve said it before, but again – THANKS for all the hard work in pulling this project together! You both have done a remarkable job.

Thanks also to Barbara Peterson, Kristy Pennino, and Dennis Santspree who assisted in countless reviews of the web site. Thanks for offering such valuable feedback.

So go check out the site and let us know what you think!

I think it looks great! The design better represents the potential of Valencia design students and the design program itself. I think the graphics blog updates seems to bite into the content pages more than it probably should, but otherwise I'm very excited about how it turned out! Now, about that GDG site....

I like it very much! Good job Jason and Efrain, I already know Efrain is way beyond skilled in his css and html, not only that he has a good eye for design! I have had him in a couple classes already, and his work is always excellent. Anyways, I love all the extra links and categories on the site now! It's awesome! By the way Efrain, your personal website is super cute.

come on bro. same style again, give it a rest. PLEASE try something different, new, how about something unique. I've seen that style a thousand times. don't like it, sorry for my honesty. Graphic Design is no about having one same style. you need evolve, you need to learn how to be come more versatile.

I think it looks pretty awesome! What I really like about it is that I think it will help attract potential students interested in graphics. It really gives the program a fresh feel.

Great job on all your hard work guys! The site is a great achievement and looks really great, but there sure is a lot of bright colors. I wonder if progress is being made at the GDG site?

I like it very much, however, it is very contemporary and very "right this minute." Given that it is a web site, that is fine, once the vector maximalism style goes out of favor, it can be changed with the snap of someone's fingers. (Various skins might be an interesting project). I like the idea behind it very much. It has a lot of energy, a lot of freedom, a lot of flow. It says to me, "If you look out your window, and the world doesn't look like this, you aren't working hard enough." I like that. A LOT. - The justified type makes me sad. - The bright colors makes me happy. - The use of a thin white rule binding box for everything, therefore grounding everything, makes me VERY happy. Very, very happy, as this is something overlooked quite often. - The distressed type is confusing. The design is bright, energetic, a lil' nuts. It is still very legibile, so kudos. - The bright cyan background makes me VERY happy. - The roll overs are a wonderous touch. It adds a lot to the equation. - I'm very keen on the layout and heriarchy of information. Something to consider: http://multimedia.valenciacc.edu/images/trans.gif If you save that as a PNG, you might be able to get rid of that antialiasing issue. I think you've both done a fanastic job. You should be extremely pleased with your work.

The site made it onto the CSS showcase gallery CSS Mania for those interested - here's a direct link.

I was actually considering making the transparency with a png. But since IE 6 doesn't support it I stuck with a gif. I was reading up on some png transparecny hacks for IE. Some used javascript but it doesnt work if you have the png setup as background in css. (It has to be in the html as a tag ). I was reading up some more then I came across a filter where I can make it display gif in IE and png on all other browsers. I'm still thinking of what way to go... unless I just leave it as a gif... What do you guys think.

I must confess last semester I did not use the multimedia site. I was too busy struggling GRA 1142C. I liked the resources a lot. I read some articals and am definitely goging to research " The best of photoshop resources and more" by Amanda Kern
