The Experts Have Spoken!
Last Saturday, Valencia’s Graphic Design Group successfully organized and hosted the event titled, Visual Voices: The Experts Speak. There was a great turnout and a lot was learned from the balanced viewpoints of their five industry experts: Nick Sambrato, Fiona Anavi, Mario Saccamango, Daissy Linares and Eddie Misicka. The expertise on the panel ranged from print production, hand-crafted, advertising firm, web design and development and education. The educational experience varied just as widely from non-design educated, AS Degree earners and Masters-level degrees in the industry.
Although one might expect a group of panelists with such varying levels of education and expertise to disagree more often than not, they actually agreed with one another on a great deal of important issues such as: How much education should one seek in design, what type of work should a designer train for (print? web?), advice for the freelance designer, pricing and ethical guidelines for designers, and much more. The Graphic Design Group, with funding from Valencia’s Student Development Office, made this event possible. To become a member, just show up to a meeting and pay your dues ($5 per semester). The Graphic Design Group accepts new members all year long and meets every thursday afternoon on the East Campus in Building 1 Room 215.
