The Buzz about Create Magazine
If you are a creative from Central Florida you’ve likely heard of Create Magazine. Create is a national magazine devoted to fueling the professional creative community with advice, inspiration, and the latest industry buzz. They now publish regionally to help keep creatives up to date on the latest news within their own neck of the woods.
Kristy and I were pretty excited last semester to get the opportunity to write an article to be featured nationally in this issue of Create Magazine. Seeing how one of the main focuses of this issue was creative education we decided to revisit “What the industry expects from graduates”. So this past week I received the lastest issue of Create Magazine and thought I’d give you a sneak peek incase you haven’t seen it.
The Truth About What the Industry Expects from Graduates
This article is certainly a MUST read for any creative student or those considering pursuing a degree in the creative industry. The article puts an emphasis on not just talent, but experience, life-long learning, communication, work ethic, attitude, and much more. You’ll even find a few remarks from former graduates and professionals in the industry such as Klaus Heesch of award winning design firm, Juicy Temples, who offered us his insight:
I am tired of primadonnas that think they know it all and don’t have the sense of responsibility, dedication and desire to work late nights to get a project done on time, or to simply put that ‘little bit extra’ into the piece that may just make it remarkable.
Of course there’s much more…
Now you’ll also find a lot of other great articles & studio tips in this magazine. Here are just a few examples of what you’ll find:
- How to Find Passionate Employees courtesy of Young Money
- Motion Graphics by Amy Meadows
- What’s in a Brand? More than just a name! by Stephen R. Baird
- Life on the Edge with Generation Tomorrow by Martin Lindstrom
- Passion by Dana Delapi
Inspiration at the Intersection
I was also excited to see the article Inspiration at the Intersection by Bob Kodzis, the author of one of the most memorable articles I’ve read, “10 Traits of the Greats”. In this issue of Create, Kodzis delivers another inspiring article about how experimentation, failure, diversity and much more can trigger inspiration and creativity. Kodzis mentions in this article, “To err is divine, to fear is fatal”. One of the things I enjoyed reading most was his quote of Frans Johansson:
Many organizations get uncomfortable when you raise the topic of passion. Leaders love to plan. They love to control things. But control can kill passion. Control does not allow for much experimentation or many mistakes.
So thanks Bob for reminding us all that a little failure is okay, especially if it opens up new and better creative ideas!
2007 Learn Supplement
Now if you are a creative student or you are considering pursuing a degree in the creative industry you’ll definitely benefit from this issue of Create. It features a lot of the top schools offering degrees that will prepare you for a creative career. So if you still aren’t quite sure where to go to school this is a great place to start your research.
We were thrilled to receive the support from Valencia, especially from our Dean, Aida Diaz, in making it possible for us to feature a full page ad into the Learn supplement. We just happen to be the only community college featured in Learn. We certainly have some of the most well respected creative programs at Valencia, so we’re excited to create some awareness about our arts & entertainment programs and certainly welcome those seeking to step foot into the creative industry. A special thanks goes out to Jason Ellison, who put a lot of heart into this highly creative and conceptual ad.
If you don’t have a subscription then you can subscribe online. And if you’re a Valencia student you can subscribe online and receive a student discount for just $10 a year! Just enter in the code SVALENCIA07 when subscribing.
Okay I’ve teased you enough. Go run out and get your copy of Create magazine – and then come back and let us know what you think!
