Procrastination Freight Train

caldwellbeforeafter2.jpgArticle and Visual interpretation provided by Charles Caldwell in Kristy Pennino’s Advanced Graphic Design II course.

Procrastination, its the opposite of what I’m putting down now, since I’m listing it first. With this said I’d like for you to understand that you should avoid this at all costs. If your able to do the minimum amount of work for a project, DON’T stop there go beyond that of what you felt was good and make it sick, so nasty that it makes people stop in there tracks before they can even realize that they had plans to do something else before they came upon your design.

Now in order for one to do this, one would need self motivation and a desire to exceed beyond the norm, if this is not achieved, how will you differ from anyone else designs, sure its good to conform, but I guess what I’m trying to say is that one should not follow the trend but try to be a trend setter in the design world. That’s what creativity is all about right, being unique?

For one to set the trend they will need a lot of brainstorming time to fully think out what would be the best possible route for the execution of a solution to the problem. This all leads back to procrastination, if one procrastinates, how will one have time to think about how to execute a solution effectively? Maybe your not really setting a trend, but setting a bar, lets say you saw the
bar, but heck you want to raise that bar a whole lot higher then the level you saw it at. The answer to this question is time management, if you can master this then you should be just fine. Adjusting your schedule, not overloading yourself with certain activities that you could otherwise go without doing. Set aside some time for yourself to just think and sketch out ideas on paper, there is also this thing called “taking a mind dump” where you just go to a computer, or paper, and you just spit whatever is on your mind on paper, this clears your mind of all the garbage in there, so you’ll end up thinking even more clearly when it comes down to brainstorming.

Alright well back to procrastination and how you should avoid it. When one does this they allow themselves to think clearly hen executing a project solution. Using your self motivation will also drive you to come up with the best possible solution to problem. In order to do that you have to brainstorm for a certain amount of time before you do so, its like designing with a computer, you have to sketch out your ideas first, you can’t just go straight to the computer and expect to make a master piece.

Finally, but none the less , if you expect to do any of that stuff one has to manage their time wisely! I’m a forgetful person, and recently came across a sidekick phone, which allows me to better organize my time, I use to write down things on paper, but those pieces of paper always got lost…okay good luck!!!

If you have a goal/dream in your mind for the future, and you don't ever not have it on your mind, and you focus on it for however many years it (will) take(s) to reach it, then you should have sufficient willpower so that you will not procrastinate (I've had the same goal/dream in my mind ever since I was 12, and it never, ever leaves my mind; it just gets shifted around). If you do not a big goal/dream like this, and/or you just try and make it through the day, you'll never do really well or be content with whatever job you do get.

nice point cory. i always say that when someone is enthusiastic about what they do, they just can't wait to begin. it's all about priorities. it's clear when looking at the amount of time that a lot of award winning students put into their work that they deem what they're doing as a priority by putting it at the top of their list of things to do. for designers, this also means giving themselves enough time to develop their ideas properly and thoroughly. those who procrastinate and only give themselves a limited amount of time to develop and execute an idea properly are only ripping themselves off.

if one procrastinates, how will one have time to think about how to execute a solution effectively? I chose this because I have first hand knowledge in procrastinaiton. Throughout high school I always procrastinated and I suffered the consequences especially when it came to my grades. I learned a valuble lesson and in going to college, I knew that I had to change. I found that by organizing my time it was much easier to produce good results in every aspect of my life, especially school work.

"you have to sketch out your ideas first, you can’t just go straight to the computer and expect to make a master piece" I have to realize being a designer that it takes time and patience to creating a masterpiece. I know that it takes sacrifice and sometimes I wont be able to hangout with friends, in order to further a design for class or a client.

"Finally, but none the less , if you expect to do any of that stuff one has to manage their time wisely" I believe that poor time management skills are at the core of procrastination. If we fail to plan then we plan to fail, as trite as that may sound. When we know our best time to be creative, we can protect that time by planning our other activities accordingly [which may mean we say "no" to something]. Time management is so much more than just putting things in our calendar - it's making a plan for the things that are most important to us so that time is never a reason why we don't follow through with our very best. The truth is, we make time for what is important and contrary wise, we don't have time for what isn't important to us. In this season of my life, school is a top priority. Because I do have other priorities too, [like a wonderful husband] I need to think ahead and plan my time wisely.

"The answer to this question is time management..." For me, there is never any question about starting a project early. But I always find myself rushing to finish it at the last minute anyways. Why? I get stuck at certain points in the process, trying to perfect things far after I should have just moved on. I agree with the author in that being a master of time management is a key to success in any field, but the creative field especially.

I agree 100% to this quote...although now a days, at least for me, it hard at times to be original!! I always spend a great deal of times trying to be original either with my art or music projects. I have learn the hard way that spending time, researching, exploring different ideas and testing them can be a very rewarding experience :)!!

In a classroom, sometimes we think of a project as just a project. Not potential for the piece of art that will get us hired one day. That in itself is enough of a reason for us to never procrastinate again. Because it's NOT just homework. It's the representation of who you are and what you bring to the table. I have thought for far too long of assignments as simply that, nothing more. And I regret the time I've wasted. This is a wake-up call.

"sure its good to conform" But is that all you want to do? I think people who are getting into this field should be passionate about their work and and do the best they can. I hated english and having to write an essay but I realized what helped me not to procrastenate was to sit down and start writting, I think the same could help students in graphic design.

Mr. Caldwell confirms that a "mind dump" is what I've been doing all along. So I'm not crazy! I appreciate this advice and will continue to free my cluttered mind all at once (via the dum) so I can think again. Sometimes all the activity upstairs can be overwhelming!

"Adjusting your schedule, not overloading yourself with certain activities that you could otherwise go without doing" The only thing that overloading ourselves can bring is nothing more than an exhausted body and mind. The worse combination to execute any activity, for that will give as a result a mediocre final product Everyone needs some time to effectively complete something, never the less in this and many other industries time seems to be "gold", so rather than spending it as it comes it would really help to organize it and always make time for yourself as we do need to enjoy life sometimes

True time management is key in every aspect of life. Unfortunately our best laid plans always seem to be foiled by the fates, so why tempt them? They are a troublesome lot! Life is more enjoyable when I have my act together. I want to enjoy these classes and get all I can out of them, which means not scrambling at the last minute and doing the bare minimum. Every day is a clean slate, make the most of it!

Set aside some time for yourself to just think and sketch out ideas on paper... Sketching and writing out ideas is a very important part to design that most people forget to do, myself included! I like to open the program and begin working right away. Starting an idea journal when you are assigned a project will help you create more ideas to choose from when designing. This will also help you with procrastination because the more ideas you have the more excited you will be to get started on projects. Remembering to start early is always the key to creating a good finished project.

"lets say you saw the bar, but heck you want to raise that bar a whole lot higher then the level you saw it at." Many times I have found myself where I wished that I had given more time into a project and could have made it so much better! And time management is essential to it all. Twenty times in the name of your career adjust your work; polish and repolish it (in his own words was the key to succes to a poet of the French literature, Nicolas Boileau) It is the road to a great result. When you take time ahead to get things done, not only will avoid extra unnecessary stress.. but your acheivement will feel honorable and reward worthy!

" In all truth I do procrastinate... on projects that I really hate. Not so much for personal reasons but just for creative limitations. If I'm going to have a limit on how far I can set my bar, then I won't even have an expectation at all and treat it as busy work. For projects that I truly love or have a motivation for it (like my client constantly love talking about it and have an open but clear vision), I'll have plenty of energy because my desire to enjoy the end product will be high. The less I'll enjoy the end product, the less I'll care to get it done right away.

"That’s what creativity is all about right, being unique?" I agree, being unique is very important. I think no one should follow any trend or conform in any way. I believe in truly expressing yourself, no matter what everyone else is doing. I believe art gives people an opportunity to show the world what's in their head, how they think, what they dream, how they see the world. If you follow a trend or sort of copy someone's work, you're not showing your true self and not really learning and getting to know yourself. The more you depend on other people, the less you depend on yourself.

These two things DO NOT work well together. I know that being in this program will help me to better prioritize my time and get a good jump start on all of my projects. I am really excited about graphic design, which helps me from putting my assignments off until the last minute. I absolutely cannot wait to get started. I have been burned by procrastination in the past, but I refuse to let it hinder my creativity this time around. :)

I agree completely with this statement. If everyone were and did the same thing, nothing would be fresh or interesting. It’s good to stand out, but in a good way. Every were you go you’ll see people always trying to be the best, to stand out. It’s good that there is a bit of a challenge in life, or else you wouldn’t feel like you actually accomplished anything.

This all leads back to procrastination, if one procrastinates, how will one have time to think about how to execute a solution effectively? Procrastination is a goal and time killer. all plans need time to develop and planning early will allow for great ideas to become great works of art.

My hope for this program is that in addition to the fundamentals, I will gain the experiences and knowledge to match my drive to go above and beyond! “If you expect to do any of that stuff one has to manage their time wisely!” Time management is a skill that can always be perfected and I am always working to get better at. Different projects come and go and the key to managing your time well is being able to adjust accordingly.

I like this excerpt because it is very true; it is how people succeed in graphic design and frankly in any other field one might go into. It is vital to try to go above and beyond the basic requirements of any career. In many cases it is simply the only way to truly succeed and sustain longevity in ones career.

Saying no to people so you can get your work done on time and done with quality is always the first step, once you learn how to be nice about it . . . its easy not to overload your self.

I completely agree. Always go beyond what you think looks good. always start a project as soon a it's assigned and keep working on it until it is due. You may think something looks nice but then think of something even better as you go to sleep. it's nice to have extra time to rework something so start early.

We all want to find the best possible route. These desires harbor, at least form me, the danger of being a procrastinator. When do you know that you have the BEST possible solution? Whenever you are about the go with a certain solution, you think that there has to be an even better solution. And so you delay your decision in favor of finding an even better BEST solution. And before you know it the deadline looms, your boss is getting really impatient and you realize you have become an procrastinator Let’s face it. We all have only 24 hours available to each day. This makes time management very important. Creativity has to find its place on your calendar.

Procrastination is probably the worst habit someone could pick up. And i am definitely in that list of someones. I just get so caught up doing other stuff that I shouldn't be doing just because I don't want to do what I have to do, so I wait until the last minute and then you're just rushing it and it comes out half assed. Organizing ideas and sketching is important and you won't have time to do it if you don't, well, take the time. So you have to plan ahead and start early to have the best results.

go beyond that of what you felt was good and make it sick, so nasty that it makes people stop in there tracks before they can even realize that they had plans to do something else before they came upon your design. This is inspiration at it's finest...if at least motivation for all of you. It's true that this is a competitive field, those people who you consider to be your close friends and greatest inspirations are just as likely to become your greatest competitions in the work field. I have always looked at art in general as a competition, not one in which you are the best for finishing first like a race. But instead, one in which you are considered the best for your finished product - you know the one that you spent days and days on...never ending frustrations and outlines...finally coming out to be better than you could have ever dreamed.

All i want to do is put the stuff in my head on the screen so others can see, not to become the center of everyone's attention and have my stuff become generic garble that has 50 knock offs case everyone likes.

This is something I pretty resently discovered and totally agree with "mind dumping." I discovered it works and helps all types of brain lock. When thoughts become repetitive and you just can't come up with anything cause maybe you have too much on your mind and feel like you keep coming up with same ideas and thoughts over and over again.

"Using your self motivation will also drive you to come up with the best possible solution to problem." Motivation is definitely a key factor in personal success. Without motivation one can come up with solutions to a problem, but it is very likely that it will not be the best solution. You have to have drive and desire to succeed. Procrastination often forces one to submit sup-par work, mainly because they have wasted the time that may have been used to improve and perfect their ideas. What little time is left is used to throw together whatever the artist can get away with, this is not exactly the way to build a successful career. For example, one should not procrastinate proofreading a blog before posting it :)

And the example of designing with a computer is so true! You do have to sketch an idea first before you jump the gun, especially if its something that you want to look good. I am a culprit of procrastination and in reading this it’s a reminder of how its best not to leave things last minute but instead work on it and the more you work on it, more time you give it, the better quality of work you provide.

"In order to do that you have to brainstorm for a certain amount of time before you do so, its like designing with a computer, you have to sketch out your ideas first, you can’t just go straight to the computer and expect to make a master piece." In my opinion, sketching is a very important step. By sketching, you're physically able to see what you want your design to be. Also i think that the better your design on paper is, the better your design on the computer will be, simply because you know what you want to create, and how to do it. Procrastination isn't just bad when it comes to Design, but in any other career that a person decides to do. So if you want to have succes wherever your endeavors may take you; don't procastinate and just get it done.

That's such a 'sexy' idea. I know its not the main focus of the article but its the sentence that stuck out to me the most. Not because its more important then the idea of avoiding procrastination and such, its just that I've heard the "stop procrastinating" argument a lot recently. I'm not saying that the article isn't informative and helpful, its just that the above quote stuck out in my mind more than the other lines in the article.

Now in order for one to do this, one would need self motivation and a desire to exceed beyond the norm. I choose this line because this quote is totally true! In order not to procrastinate you need to be driven by something and want to do this project as soon as possible. If you are not driven you will procrastinate because its something that you personally are not looking forward to doing. This article over all is a good learning experience and is a great work. It shows the average person what really lies behind the feelings of procrastination.

one should not follow the trend but try to be a trend setter in the design world. That’s what creativity is all about right, being unique? I really Agree on that note. If you Can make your mark stand out, and draw your designs to the eye of the people and also to yourself. people will be drawn to your work because it will stand out. Time management to master that wow life would be so much easier. Its Something Im fighting to conquer.

"-they will need a lot of brainstorming time to fully think out what would be the best possible route for the execution of a solution to the problem." This is great advice to always keep in mind. Setting time aside to just think and be inspired is crucial. I find that a lot of times when I have procrastinated in the past it is because I didn't make the time to brainstorm and really think things out. So it was like trying to finish a puzzle with most of the pieces missing.

"One should not follow the trend but try to be a trend setter in the design world. That’s what creativity is all about right, being unique?" The work you do is within itself unique. Question is does it appeal to the people you are working for or are personally trying to affect. I imagine any designers goal is to go above and beyond with each and every piece. I like to make something up and let others see what I have come up with and what my intentions are with this idea and obviously take critiques and from that just take in all ideas and either add or take away and maybe scratch out the entire piece itself. Assuming you're starting out with design and that is the only thing you are doing, I would think if you have multiple projects you start off with the ones that give you the most ideas and you are just inspired to do, you would probably work way more efficiently and may not exactly need to stop and procrastinate and dilly-dally with other time consuming things or other projects you're just not sure what to do with.

"The answer to this question is time management, if you can master this then you should be just fine. " -Oh, time management. Lots of students with the help of financial aid and scholarships could probably find it easier to manage time than someone who has a full-time job. I am a victim of procrastination because of this reason. Hopefully now, with my help of finaid I will be able to get the software needed for the graphic design industry so that I may do assignments and side projects at my job during breaks and at home. This would definitely help me avoid the procrastinator in me.

I really enjoy reading things like this. Right now I feel inspired and ready to do something creative after this. And it is the only way that I have the energy to do everything I want and more. I read about what people are doing for their own personal worth in graphic design and in any type of design for that matter and I feel motivated. My reading is beyond the norm. I do sometimes struggle with hitting a dry spell in my creatives juices and think that I need to take a long break. It is just my crazy head that misinterprets the unknown or what is going to happen next into a class of negativity and not the world at my fingertips. thanks for the blog.

Why I chose this and my reaction is! That I find this to be true in my like, I find myself writing this also on paper specially when I'm writing song or phrases of a song or even an idea or title of a song that I feel has meaning for would be beautiful to capture a persons attention for something that would touch there heart, feeling for emotions.

I totally agree with this statement. I, too, used to procrastinate. Badly. I remember staying up until 4am to do homework that I knew was due 5 days prior. The end result was always a horrible, rushed mess. I used to think that by putting myself under pressure, I'd get my creative juices flowing and produce this AMAZING project that would look like it took forever to do. Ooops....Apparently my teachers saw right through that. I remember that I had a teacher tell me once that when you rush yourself, you limit yourself. I didn't think that was true, until I grew up. Now I can see a huge difference in the quality of my work when I spend a lot of time on it, rather than putting it off. Plus, when you put things off, you're taking a huge risk. You never know what's going to happen in the future, and people rarely ever plan for the unexpected. So you may put off a project until the night before it's due, and something happens. You can't finish it on time, you fail. That was a lesson I had to learn in order to change my habits. Why put something off for tomorrow, when you can get it done today?

She said you won't be a successful graphic desinger if you were late to come to the meeting or come to class. Well, graphic design is a time sensative job which means you turn your work late and you are out of business. Well, we have to think it seriously because you could cost thousands of dollars lost from simple time matter. As a graphic desinger, we have to take it seriously and use it wisely.

These lines are exactly what needs to be in the head of every artist. Going beyond what you think you can do, try new things, new ways to make your design better then everyones else's. A design that yells across the room is what I go for. I need a reaction of "oh my god" to actually make me happy. Anything less makes me feel as if I could have done something more.

Sometimes I can be pretty lazy and not want to get out of bed. I feel motivated to get up and do my work and to do it well. What would this world be if there was no one who worked hard? No one who was creative and wanted to use there brain to the full? The world would be completely different. All the things and ideas I love would not be here. I am motivated to create!

This all leads back to procrastination, if one procrastinates, how will one have time to think about how to execute a solution effectively?" Ignore the fact that I'm writing this at 2 am the night before class. Designing is a process. I mean, people are basically paying you to be more creative than the rest of the world. Accomplishing that requires time. A lot of time. To think that you can hold off until days/ hours before something is do isn't practical. I guess it all goes back to where your passions are, something I keep coming back to in these posts. If you're really passionate about something, you want to put time into it. In fact, it is a pleasure to put time into it. It's the first thing you think about doing when you wake up. It's the thing you look forward to when you go to sleep. If design is one of those things for you, then procrastination doesn't really make sense.

"This all leads back to procrastination, if one procrastinates, how will one have time to think about how to execute a solution effectively?" This is a good point, because graphic design is almost always deadline driven, especially in the business world. Actually, many things in the business world are deadline driven. However, because graphic design is a creative discipline there are many different ways to reach the final product, and thus many ideas and concepts to explore. If you really want to create your best product you better allow yourself sufficient time to make changes. This is especially true when you have a client you have to answer to, and more importantly, listen to. You never know what last minute changes might be lurking.

But I know that I'm always going to be inspired by everyone else's work and that is what keeps me going.

One of my goals that I have set for all of my designs is to "push it". And I think I speak for every designer when I say that if you look at a project long enough you will find something else to do or a better way to do it. That is a statement i truly live by. Every time i consider stopping somewhere in designing something just to rest, there is a feeling of going back to improve on it. "Procrastination, its the opposite of what I’m putting down now, since I’m listing it first." Procrastination is when people forfeit and give up on their job and it takes longer and longer for them to get the job done. In the work industry...procrastination is not a good thing to have. You will not get paid if you do not do your work or what you are told to do so. If you procrastinate, it just means that you will never get your moneys worth when working several hours in the day time. Thus they could fire you if you do procrastinate too much. I however procrastinate way too much. It is not a good thing to have in life, but sometimes i struggle hard to get an item done for others. Whether it be for artwork, or even work itself. I prolong myself every day just to get something done. One thing you never want to do at a job is procrastinate on your work. THEY WILL FIRE YOU!!!

“that one should not follow the trend but try to be a trend setter in the design world.” I liked this line because it is something that we all strive to be, and if you do not set up enough time for your brainstorming we are just going tot re-hack ideas from other people. We need to be as original as we can, and originality takes time because if it comes to us on a whim most likely someone else has thought about it first. Give ourselves pleanty of time.

Why should i do the minimum when we surpass that and make people stop and really notice you, your work, everything that one does in life. I especially want to incoporate this into my assignments and the next couple of years studying at VCC. I thought this line was so funny but at the same time, totally true. Even in my everyday life there will be times when I need to focus but the thoughts and ideas of life are floating around my head and making focusing difficult. I love this excerpt! I think it's so true, with a twist of humor. Why be like everyone else? If you want the best job out there when you graduate, then you need to do the best work. Talent is a huge component of "being the best" but I feel that sometimes the students who are naturally talented don't make it where they have potential to be. This is because of procrastination and not pushing the bar even higher than they thought possible. And then sometimes there's someone who may not have as much natural talent, who push that bar with all their strength and end up being the one being hired.

I'm sure there are a lot of people out there, myself included, who can relate to this post. Time management and organization is critical for success in school and in the business world. I've written myself countless notes on paper and immedialty lose it in the mess of papers throughout the day. Meeting times, phone numbers, important tasks have all been lost because of this. I'm now using a Palm Centro and have it synched with my MS Outlook, so now everything stays nice and organized. Find a way to constantly remind yourself what needs to be done and prioritize that list. It's hard to put things off when you are constantly being reminded to do something. The most difficult part is finding a system that works for you, but after that it's smooth sailing.

From there it is a lot easier to do something beyond because you know what you need to be doing to beat the others-or at least compete.

In order to do that you have to brainstorm for a certain amount of time before you do so, its like designing with a computer, you have to sketch out your ideas first, you can’t just go straight to the computer and expect to make a master piece. you make some good points and they are very good ideas. people need to learn how to manage thier time better and clear thier minds of distractions and putting things off till the last minute.

"I’m a forgetful person, and recently came across a sidekick phone, which allows me to better organize my time, I use to write down things on paper, but those pieces of paper always got lost." I chose this excerpt because I can relate to it. I don't have a sidekick but I used to just use pieces of paper and put them in my purse but my purse is a black hole and I might find that piece of paper a month too late, making it useless. I have found that a day-timer with room to write out a detailed daily schedule works just fine.

Often I find my self regretting not putting more time into a project, but more so I sometimes come up with amazing ideas with easy. My goal is to use great ideas as stepping stones rather then bars, i can do better, and I will!

I call that time alone "letting the juices flow"... But also, we don't necessarily need time alone, sometimes in the middle of the day, while listening to music or even during class, we get really great ideas. When you get one of those moments, stop whatever you are doing and sketch it down. Remember, it only took Walt Disney a great idea to create the imperium we enjoy today.

I think this is an important part of the routine of a student, specially those that work part or full time. To be successful, there must be a balance between work and college. I need to adjust my schedule because sometimes I think I can do everything at the same time and I finish up realizing that I couldn't do anything.

This quote is one that I am constantly trying to perfect. The minimum amount of work might get you the grade or the client you are aiming for; but, you (I) need to make your work stick out. Going above and beyond will guarantee that impact. Hard work goes a long way. This article, like all of the other ones I read, pertains to me a lot. I have flaws that I need to work out. Nobody is perfect, being organized helps.

Procrastination sits on my left shoulder. It flows through my blood. I know it's there, but I let procrastination pull me down. The only time I actually fight it off is when I take pride in something I'm doing. When I go the extra mile. I can totally relate to this whole article.

"Now in order for one to do this, one would need self motivation and a desire to exceed beyond the norm..." Often procrastination stems from fear: fear of failure, success, exposure, disappointment -- the list is endless. Procrastinators are quite often perfectionists below the surface; they sometimes refuse to start a project for fear that the result won't meet their expectations. This results in what is perceived as a lack of motivation.

Now in order for one to do this, one would need self motivation and a desire to exceed beyond the norm, if this is not achieved, how will you differ from anyone else designs, sure its good to conform, but I guess what I’m trying to say is that one should not follow the trend but try to be a trend setter in the design world. I used this excerpt because I was famous for Procrastinating. I did just enough work to pass my assignments and waited to the last minute to do them. But one day I woke up and motivated myself and started getting things done the right way. This all leads back to procrastination, if one procrastinates, how will one have time to think about how to execute a solution effectively? I see procrastination as one of those things that helps a stumped mind succed. I do most of my best ideas under procrastination. “The answer to this question is time management…” Why is it that no matter what time I start my project my best work impulsively comes out at 4 am the night before my work is due. Always, I could start it first day given out, and my creative juices hold out on me until it can't anymore. So now I'm just learning to push the creative flow until some comes out because last minute although it can come out great, noting feels better than finishing early with a great outcome.

Every kind of person has a different way to stay organized. Some people can do it mentally, others need constant reminders and I’d consider myself the latter. I need to keep notes in a planner, sticky notes plastered to my walls, written reminders on a desk calendar, a digital calendar and sometimes written on my hands or I have friends remind of things I need to do…And some how I still manage to forget thing.

"Using your self motivation will also drive you to come up with the best possible solution to (the) problem." Nothing in here really caught my attention like this line and that's probably because everything else sounded like something my parents have said. This is textbook advice to offer to professional procrastinator (trust me, I was one of them so I would know) so this one line really stuck out. Mainly because, for me, self-motivation was nonexistent so breaking off from that mindset was quite a task. The approach will be different for all of us. However the central idea here is to take the time to think about what you want and how you're gonna get it. The "brain dumping" idea is an interesting suggestion that I will try in hopes of producing more.

I liked this line a lot. Often times we will see an artist recreate a piece that they had once completed because a piece of artwork is almost never done. I know for myself, as my work is inspired through my day to day experiences, I may create a piece, but need to later go back to it because of something new that I experienced that I want to incorporate into my work. That is why it is important not to procrastinate because the best art is inspired through collective experiences of an individual and if a piece is done in a hurry and all at once even the best of visions could turn out to seem messy, uninspiring, and unclear.

But now My problem is solved...I just need to get a sidekick. Or a planner at least.

"one should not follow the trend but try to be a trend setter in the design world" This line is very important, because as beginner level designers we tent to copy others ideas, or use others ideas then modify them with our own uniqueness. But that’s the key word, “unique” something many people in this industry are lacking. We see it all the time on movie posters and album covers, were is the uniqueness? We even hear it in songs, “hey this song sounds familiar” or “that rap song is just using a classic retro tune because they ran out of ideas”. That line brought back some arguments I had about artists these days, so that’s why it stood out for me.

I always recommend the method of brainstorming to my friends or anyone who ask me where to get ideas from, but I have never thought of clearing your mind to have more concrete ideas about a project, which it does helps a lot since we are constantly overloading our brains with information.

Adjusting your schedule, not overloading yourself with certain activities that you could otherwise go without doing. This particular acticle I feel all applies to me. I am unfortunatly a huge procrasinator and always have been and that's because I have never felt challenged. I realized when I started taking this class it was going to require numerous amounts of time managment but I didn't realize how much. I had to cut back almost half of my hours at work and stop doing the things that weren't benifiting my studies. But now I feel that challenge, the challenge to set the bar and think me.

"make it sick, so nasty that it makes people stop in there tracks" No one wants a cookie cutter designer, unless they are designing cookie cutters. That being said I feel it is important to always try something new while always looking for that one signature style that screams you from the roof tops. Shepard Fairey has achieved this as well as many other artist. They maintain a new and fresh feeling with each design but once seen by the public it is easily recognized and linked to the creater. But to use someone else's already traveled path might make you decent but it is blazing your own trail that makes you brilliant.

Everyone is capable of making a good design or a creative design. Whether you're born with talent or not, I believe there's certain ingredients to what makes a great designer. I know that if you want to be a designer, you got to have the passion. Something that I can admit that I lack is consistent self motivation and the desire to design for months. There will be times when all I'd want to do is design and times where I need a break. I agree with everything said in this article. Procrastination is definitely your worst enemy. It really kills the time that you should use to learn more about designing or just designing in general. Time is something I'm learning to value more as I grow older. Every idea that comes to your head can evolve and has a chance to become an even better idea with a creative process. I usually "mind dump" quite a lot and sketch out anything that comes to mind when I have a pencil and paper in front of me. For now, I'm working on time-management because it's very essential to have as a future designer.

This quote stood out to me because it's really something that I can relate to. As soon as I came across the word "PROCRASTINATION" I had to stop and read it. Speaking from experience procrastinating isn't the way to go. I tend to know exactly what it is that I need to do but, for some reason I find myself doing something else. This article speaks a lot of truths. What may not come as a distraction to you may turn out to be your biggest distraction. You have to take time out for yourself, to brainstorm, to actually draw down a plan to get things done. Otherwise, you'll get nowhere but back to where you started every single time.

I know, for me, procrastination has always been a big foe. I just completed my B.A. at UCF and all throughout my time there, that was where my biggest battle was fought. Looking back, I see that part of that had to do with the fact that I wasn't completely satisfied with my classes (especially ones that didn't pertain to my degree). They just didn't keep my attention. But, I'm now pursuing a graphic design certificate from Valencia and I find myself excited to work on projects and work for my classes. This big change happened because I finally CARED about what I was doing. I'm learning things that are extremely interesting to me and things that I've wanted to learn more about for a while. Moral of the story: procrastination is defeated when you are doing something you love. If you find yourself in a place where you aren't happy and most of your time is spent doing other things other than what you need to be doing, it may be time for a change.

Procrastination is one subject that always hits close to home to everyone given that we have all been guilty of it at some point or another. I find that when I have ample time for a project I'll wait till the day before and sometimes even the day of to do it simply because it isn’t usually the most exciting undertaking. My personal trick to overcoming procrastination is to break down the task that I am for whatever reason trying to avoid, be it because I feel like I have plenty of time to do it still or because I just don’t find it fun. If I have a week to complete a project I'll break down all the different components into smaller, more manageable tasks for each day leading up to the deadline that way it’s not as overwhelming or as daunting. I also love the idea of “taking a mind dump” I always have so many thoughts running through my mind that it gets overwhelming and leaves very little room for anything else. I know that when it comes to procrastination it is not only something that I tend to do in the external world but also internally. Writing out my thoughts allows me to let go of them or at least give them some perspective so that I can deal with them accordingly. When you let go of any negative or procrastinated thoughts we can allow for new ideas to burgeon.

As a retired procrastinator, I know procrastination can have you in a sticky situation. It prevents a person from reaching their highest potential. In order to not get into this trend of procrastination you have to plan well, put it in a calendar in your phone or right it down in a agenda. As a student and a employee you have to have great time management. I learned that the hard way, if you do a certain task day by day it wont be as hard to finish it if a person was to procrastinate.

This article took a different approach to the problem we all face with procrastination. Rather than giving you the, "11 Quick Tips to Stopping Procrastination." The writer decided to straighten us out. I mean truth be told, we all procrastinate, and that brings a lot of problems for us. And if we are truly passionate about our careers, then shouldn't we be pushing ourselves to raise the bar. Lacking motivation and passion is the issue here, because we always manage to push those things we don't care for till the end. We manage to watch Netflix into the late hours of the night and then cry about waking up to finish our projects. If we want to be like that sole designer we look up too so much, we need to prepare ourselves and work harder than ever to surpass them. Like a quote I read the other day says, "working hard for something we don't care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion."

Procrastination has always been a tough habit for me to overcome. It comes and goes in waves. There was even a point in time when I excused it with, "oh, I do my best work when I'm under pressure." But in reality it's not the best work I'm capable of producing. I find a lot of my delay comes from a fear or making mistakes. I just have to remind myself that you cannot get to the "good stuff" without flushing out bad ideas. Learning to say no, has also become crucial in my time management. There is only so much time available for a quality life and work. I have started developing, and actually using, to-do lists with my Evernote app which really helps me not feel overwhelmed and accomplish my daily goals.

I have had a problem with procrastination for a long time. I tend to go off on tangent thoughts and ideas. I get drawn to other things that are on my mind. It has cost me, in way of grades, social events, and more. In truth I need help, and I am getting it, in the way of support at home, and the resources at school. I find that schedules and checklist help. But I need to make sure I can catch the fire that I always start with and hold it tight.

I am a person who used to procrastinate, a lot. But last semester I have really put in that extra effort into fixing that problem, and it really has helped me out more than I thought it would. Not only was I able to finish all my work in time, but it saved me a lot of stress, and i had tons of extra time to do other things besides worrying about when an assignment was due. It also helped me in understanding a subject better, and when something goes wrong, I don't panic about having to fix it in a certain amount of time. For anyone who tends to procrastinate, I encourage them to try and break that habit, because it is possible if you set your mind to it.

I feel that one of the most difficult things to deal with when it comes to procrastination is an inability to focus for an extended period of time. I find that between 15 to 30 minutes is relatively easy, anything more than that and my train of thought starts derailing to other ideas. This is a lot more evident when reading lots of text. Whenever i find myself procrastinating, trying to focus on NOT procrastinating makes getting things done that much more difficult.Trying to think about staying focused on an idea seems like it would make it easier, it does not. Its similar to what happens when one tries to clear the mind and think about nothing, but the idea of thinking about NOTHING is still thinking about SOMETHING, so we can see how that can get complicated. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to take a break and do something you enjoy and your mind will clear naturally and effortlessly, and that in turn will make it easier to process new information.

Most of the time i find myself procrastinating it is because I either have a simple, but time consuming task I don't want to do or because I quickly jump to the conclusion that whatever I have to do while take a long time to finish so I'd rather do something I enjoy first and then get to work (basically play first, work later). I'm glad I came across this article because it reminds me that to have a good design takes time and preparation that cannot be rushed, precisely what would happen if you procrastinate. Also, I'm definitely going to try the "mind dump" suggestion; seems like a great way to find inspiration and new ideas while clearing my head of any junk, worries, or stray thoughts.

Daunting! That is the word that comes to mind when I procrastinate, usually its not the lack of motivation or desire to succeed, its because I do not know how to start! Like the white canvas or white piece of paper, the start is always daunting if you just don't have that ‘spark’! For sure, I will try ‘mind dump’ next time I have am constipated of creativity! However, I do believe that sometimes working under pressure…just gets the job done (this works for anything but creative stuff)! Sure the extra time is much better, to finalize, edit, and perhaps push ideas further and make them original. But I don’t think any amount of technology can rid of procrastination, we just have to get down, rough-it up with our own temptations to do something else, and just do the work. A friend of mine many many years ago said something which I will never forget… “There is no magic trick to good work or getting 'the' grades…its just hard work”.

I’ve always procrastinated because I discovered that I could get away with it in high school and still get a satisfying grade. However, the extra stress and anxiety that procrastinating gives me is not worth it. Not to mention all the times I’ve turned in something I felt was incomplete despite the grade received contradicting that. I am a perfectionist. I always think there’s room for improvement no matter how many hours are invested in a piece of work. The biggest thing I struggle with when it comes to designing is that instead of leaving a rough draft alone, I’ll edit it as I go without the original content existing anymore. Then when it comes time to make additional changes on my own, I cannot think of anything else unless I have someone else evaluating my work. This is something I am continuously working on to get better.

I have always struggled with procrastination. Although I've produced some great work through the last minute pressures that procrastinations causes, I have already discovered in my first week at Valencia that this will not fly in the Graphic Design program if I'm planning on excelling. As one of my professors described it, it is not a sprint but a marathon. Many of the projects that I will have to complete this semester will take lots of time. I know I will have to stay organized and schedule in time each day for particular classes and assignments. I need to take each task as they come and not try to bog myself down by trying to complete everything at once.

This is such a helpful article, I always procrasinate and leave things last minute just because i didn't feel like doing it before. It is so much more beneficial when all your work is completed first. When you discussed about time management and adjusting your schedule to make sure you don't overload or become stressed out it really donned on me that why am i not more organized? My life would be much more successful if i had a schedule or if i begin my work as soon as it was handed to me. I also loved hearing about the "mind dumb" its such an easier way to get out of a creative funk where no ideas pop out and your just stuck. i am definetly want to be a great graphic designer even if i have never done a graphic design in my life. All i know is that i get to be creative and thats all i need to enjoy a career. i thank you kpennino for your very informative article it will truly help me in the future.

I think for me procrastinating was more of me doubting my self in everything. I would look at it and be like "I don't know" and then just stop or put whatever it was back. At least to forget about it for a little bit longer and not have to deal with the headache of the" I don't know".I do agree though time management is everything, that is something i am working on because i do tend to wait till the last minute and for the most part i get what i need done well DONE. Doing so just stresses me out and doesn't come out how i wanted because i wouldn't give it the time. I feel as if its kind of like having a relationship because if you don't put the time or the effort your gonna either A. lose it or B.Have a relationship without passion. Same goes for a piece that you have to do and you know you can do it at the last minute but its not gonna have your passion in it, its just gonna be a piece that you had to do. Long thought short, it is very important to start stuff early so that you have many chances to change, fix, enjoy, and redo if needed.

"taking a mind dump" this words will change my future. Although I used to struggle with procrastination as most do, I have managed to get a hold of it now that I'm working on becoming a professional. This article really sums up steps that I have used myself and its nice to know that someone else also has found these methods helpful. However, I have always struggled with brainstorming because there is always so much going up in there (ma brain). This method of letting all the clutter out of your brain seems to be a good way of not only to organizing your thoughts but to providing a way of self evaluation. Time management is also a priority that should never be overlooked. It could single-handedly make or break any project taking time to manage your time is super important.

Usually my procrastination begins at the beginning. When given a task with a deadline I either find myself in two different mindsets. One is not knowing the "appropriate" time and place to start. If I feel like my day has been too busy, I wait till later. If I feel like I dont have all the resources I need in front of me, I wait till I have them. Then I'll find myself a day or two before deadline and I'll be rushing to find all my resources (computer, posterboard, etc) and the time or place to do it. Then there's my cocky " I could get this done in a day" mindset which is me basically just waiting till the last minute to do something, then realizing that whatever I'm doing is going to take longer than I thought. I'm trying to teach myself to be motivated. I need to convince myself that if I attend to the task at hand as soon as possible, I will be rewarded with not only a project that is amazing, but a better grade and recognition for my hard work.

Procrastination is/was my middle name, I struggle with it. Maybe because i doubt myself. It doesn't help that i have no computer skills so i get lost and just give up. I started the graphic design classes but ended up quitting and really not giving myself the chance to evolve to something great. well now I'm back in class with a strong will to learn and become a better designer/artist this article really hit home for me. I'm getting myself more organize and responsible, asking more questions and not been afraid of taking the next step. The more I ask and do the easier it gets and the more i like the graphic design industry. No more procrastinating.

The best way I have found to deal with procrastination has been to keep a fairly strong routine throughout the week. When each day follows a routine I feel that I keep a better momentum and can get a little done one each project each day. I know that in the creative process nothing can be rushed, so I like breaking down big projects into small pieces so that my mind can wander and create at it's own pace. The best ideas come when there is no pressure and I'm doing something else, or when I can come back to look at something with a fresh eye, so having plenty of time is key. I also like making lists of ways to break down each project so that as I go I can cross off things that I've accomplished. I find that seeing myself move along keeps me motivated and from lagging behind. All that being said, something about the creative process makes it hard to keep moving and stay on task, so I appreciate the encouragement from this article! Lianne Adamczyk Hayre
