Observations from Portfolio Center
Recently 2006 Best of Show ADDY Award winner, Kevin Scarbrough, contacted us after his first few weeks at Portfolio Center and offered some great feedback we thought we’d share with current graphics students, faculty, & staff. If you aren’t familiar with Portfolio Center, it is a pretty prestigious design school located in Atlanta, Georgia, which offers specialized training in various design careers to include art direction, advertising, photography, and illustration. If you don’t know Kevin, he is an exceptionally talented designer who graduated this past spring from Valencia Community College with an A.S. in Graphics Technology, specializing in print/advertising graphic design. He has since decided to continue with his education by moving on to Portfolio Center. He informed us that his undergraduate education was very extensive in comparison to many of his classmates at Portfolio Center and believes the technical proficiency and design knowledge he has gained at Valencia has better prepared him for his continued education. Kevin claimed this is “just more proof of Valencia’s awesomeness.”
One thing that Portfolio Center clearly supports is the creative process. Kevin offered some insight as well as a reminder to those students who aren’t so fond of doing rough drafts, “You can kindly remind anyone groaning at having to draw 10 sketches on a project that 10 sketches aren’t very many. Child’s play. A wrist slap. I’m working on a mandated 300 sketches for the initial concept for a single poster. Not the final poster, just the initial concept.” Good thing Kevin is a dedicated student who also claims to be a work-a-holic!
We want to thank Kevin for sharing is experiences – we wish you the best of luck in furthering your education at Portfolio Center! We’re confident you’re going to be soaring on to great things!
