HOW Design Conference 2007 Adventures

As many of you know, this week I’ve been attending the HOW Design Conference in Atlanta. Although I travelled alone, I’m not, there are plenty of people here representing Orlando including the Juicy Temples gang (Klaus Heesch, Amanda Hutton and Jeremy Perez-Cruz) and alumni Karla Gonzalez (now in New York) and Kevin Scarbrough (now in AtlantaSketchy Notes attending Portfolio Center). I have also taken advantage of the opportunities to laugh, hang and have a few drinks (iced teas of course!) with old and dear friends as well as make new ones.

I am excited to share all the new things I’m learning (Whew! My brain is going to burst!) however, I am even more excited to share with you my discoveries from a second goal that I had while here – to go outside of the box and create an adventure beyond what was provided for the conference fee. Although HOW has provided plenty of adventure, for the past couple of years now, I have been feeling as though my stories are getting stale, so I felt this was the perfect opportunity for me to develop some new ones. Besides, it’s time for me to practice what I preach in Creative Thinking!

On a side note, I’ve really found Atlanta to be a unique textural city with well preserved southern charm and manners. Homeless people offer their umbrellas when it rains, everyone smiles and even the pigeons are polite. Check out our flickr account for some texture images I’ve collected that help sum up the visual atmosphere here.

Just so you know what to expect: In the next several weeks I will be slowly leaking stories and sharing images with you – giving you enough time to explore new resources and absorb the content in a leisurely manner. My goal is for you to enjoy the HOW Conference through my eyes, so keep on the lookout for stories and adventures coming your way!

I cannot encourage you guys enough to come to HOW next year. It has been an incredible and rewarding experience! Eat rice for a month. Save. Go. There exists two educations: that which is made obvious, and that which remains mysterious. Explore the mysterious, you'll learn as much if not more (just be careful of the various ne'er-do-wells on the 2 AM train).

ah, yes. we're all glad you made it home safely, kevin! my technique for dealing with train dwelers - just sit there and talk to an imaginary person and they'll leave you alone. ;-)

Yes its always good to talk to multiple imaginary people. Like you're traveling in a big imaginary group. One guy has to always have anger issues, and you always have to keep telling him; "Relax man, that guy is not eyeballing you. Yes, I'm sure. Man, put that thing away! Dammit, you know I hate guns. I thought you said you gave that thing back to your uncle." Or you can come up with your own maladjusted friend.

i asked a man once on the street who he was talking to. his response was, 'i'm talking to God. do you have a problem with that?" my response was, "no, but you might want to keep it down, people will think you're crazy.". ;-)
