Remembering Robin Ambrose McCarty

robin-txt.jpgIt is very unfortunate that we must inform you all that one of our former graphics professors, Robin Ambrose McCarty, has recently passed away due to complications with cancer. Robin was with our program for quite sometime and moved on to Kentucky with her family in 2002. Robin was also the gallery curator for Valencia’s Anita S. Wooten Gallery and was instrumental in its success.

Though Robin lost her battled with cancer she will not be forgotten. Barbara Peterson, Graphics Technology Program Director, reflects “Even if students didn’t have her as an instructor she was someone that made an impact on the history of our program. When Robin was curator she advanced the graphics portion of the show so much. We owe a lot to her.” So in this time of mourning it’s important we take a moment to be thankful not only for life but to appreciate those such as Robin who have made a difference in the lives of so many.

Robin – you’ll be missed!

I had the unuiqe pleasure of knowing Robin as my professor of arts in the '80s and as a co-worker in 2000's. She always had a inspirational foothold in my experiences and will be greatly missed.

Wayne and I worked with Robin in the '90s, when she was curator and taught fine art and graphic classes. We got a kick out her wonderful, off beat humor. Wayne and I are fortunate to have one of her beautiful sculptures and as well as one of the funniest Christmas cards ever--a card so joyful and dear to us, that we take it out every year and display with all of the new cards.

I met Robin at Marymount College back in the 70's where she produced amazing clay sculptures that were so unusual, they belong in the realm of totems. She also developed her graphic skills by creating a funny, irreverent, insightful cartoons (THE BIG "A," Robin's Alter Ego ) that were published in the college's newspaper. She was not just only a gifted artist with stong curatorial skills, but a strong supported of the work of others ( She included me in a show at Velencia in 1995:Figure/Ground Relationships) I will miss my wonderful, talented friend with a generous heart.

Robin was a prolific artist, yet she always amazed me with her humble character and concern and support for others. Our time working in the ‘Den’ – the artist studio that she helped to set up at the college was such a wonderful time of exploration in the arts for all of us. Robin made my experience at Marymount College so much richer with her insight and wonderful sense of humor. She could always make me laugh; especially with her cartoons. Her outlook on life at the college was so funny and wonderfully disrespectful. I will always remember THE BIG “A”.

I am so saddened to hear of Robin's passing. She influenced so many students during her time at Valencia. I just loved her quirky sense of humor and outlook. Robin, I hope the view from up above is beautiful.

We were very fortunate to have Robin as our teacher in several classes and also worked with her when we were Lab Assistants. She was so nice and funny with all of her students and she was also so thankful for everything we did for her while working at Valencia. She was definitely one of the nicest teachers we have ever had. We'll miss you!

I am very sad Mrs. Ambrose passed away, however I am extremely happy she was the one who taught me the basics of graphic design. She was my teacher in the first class I had for my graphic design degree. She was good, tough and totally worth it. I will always remember her teachings and I will always remember her.

I loved knowing there are people like Robin in this world. Absolutely lovely, talented, funny and filled with joy for life. I still smile when the urge to use one of her catch phrases comes to mind..."bet-cha a biscuit" she'll be very missed. Thank you Robin...for all the laughter.

Robin was my instructor for DM&D in 2000, and another class that I cant seem to remember. I do remember that our personalities clashed sometimes in that class! However, she was a neat, funny lady and a great instructor. She will be missed. I wish I could tell her how much she influenced me, first as a student and as a person; now, indirectly, as a professional and designer; and soon, as an instructor of DM&D myself.

After I saw the email I couldnt believe it first, then it hit me how young she was and it made me real sad, I cried. Robin was a strong character person and I had the priviledge to know her and I wish the best to her family and all her close friends, I cant imagine how everyone must feel. She definetly made a great impacct on our school and we love her for that, God bless her on her new journey back home.

I was so sad when I heard the news about Professor McCarty. She was one of the first Professors I had at VCC. She was very dedicated and patient teaching and leading me to the Art World of Graphic Design. I do remember her smile whenever she talked with students. I also remembered the last day she was in the Graphic Lab. People brought a lot presents. I just brought her a small apple candy box. She opened it and her eyes filled with tears. It's still hard to believe Professor McCarty has passed away. I believe you will go back with God because you have made great karma in your life. Professor Robin Ambrose McCarty is a pretty lovely Professor for my life when I was at Valencia Community College. I'm going to miss Professor McCarty.

Of all of my professors during my time at Valencia, Robin stood out to me the most. Her unique way of teaching kept me interested & wanting more. I am sad to hear she is gone. Her sense of humor & creativity will remain in my memories for a lifetime. She was an inspiration to us all.

I will always remember Robin frequently doubled-over in laughter, unable to get a story out. That, or when she'd begin, "Ya know ...," and then procede to relate some gem of life experience... that usually ended in laughter, too. She had a wonderful soul, and those who knew her will, no doubt, mourn her loss greatly.

What a wonderful, and giving person she was! In 1990 I was ready to write my dissertation at UGA and needed someone to teach my classes here at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia. She had recently graduated with her MFA from UGA, and I remember asking her, "hey Robin, could we switch houses -you live in mine and teach my classes for me, and I'll live in your's and write my paper. Her answer was immediate, "Okay, but you have to take care of Miso (her cat)!" It was a flawless arrangement, and worked well for us both! I will always remember her laugh!

I am sadden to hear of the passing of Robin. I am stunned to here the news of Robin Ambrose. She was an amazing women and professor and so talented. Words can not say how she made an impact on me. I learned so much from her even though I only had two classs with her. She was so light hearted and had such a energy around here that your just wanted to be in the same room with her. Her quirky sense of humor was lovely and pleasurable to here. She made class time interactive and fun. I'll miss you Robin.

    Star Christian

I am Robin's cousin and she was going to help me illustrate some children's books I'm writing. She told me she was ill during the holidays in 2005 and it was nothing to worry about -- only non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I'd been trying to get in touch with her for several months and had not heard back from her, but one day about a month ago, her husband, Scott, called me and informed me she had died!!! I was overwhelmed and also saddened that I would never get to fulfill her dream as well as mine (working together) on a project we were both excited about. She never let me know how ill she really was. I guess she wanted to save me from seeing her so ill. Whatever reason, she was always such a lovable person and cousin, I know her reasons were for the greater good! I will always love her and miss her of course because we are of the same blood, but also because we just need more people of her ilk on this planet! I LOVE YOU, ROBIN!!!

I am Star Christian's brother and Robin's cousin also. I regret to say that I did not stay in touch with Robin as my sister did. Robin came to live with my family in Dallas, Texas for several months when she was very young because her father, Joseph Ambrose, was dying of cancer at a young age also. Robin was so cute and vivacious . She reminded my family of a little bird, just like her name. We never got to know Robin very well because our family moved to Texas and hers continued to live in the Connecticut/New York area. I can tell that she made the most of her short life and I am proud of her.
