I believe that the required expectations in the design industry should be raised. Now, especially during these economic hardships, competition in the design world is at a peak. It is easy to come by students fresh out of school with programming skills and other standard design skill, but employers don't seem to look past the "skills" column in a resume. As mentioned above, a portfolio holds much more weight than an "I can do this" resume. Portfolios house ones creativity, boundaries, and opportunities to grow. I believe it would help graduates with real potential, and employers for that matter if each applicant sent in a electronic portfolio. Not only would this cut down an employers time, it could potentially boost the most deserving graduate to the top and obtain that job. Nothing will showcase I grade 'A' employee like their resume. As I enter into the field of graphic design, I found this article to be a very informative synopsis of what this employer requires from its employees. Although the workforce seems bleak in regards to longevity and stability with a company, this job description ensures the notion of hard work makes a successful candidate. In other words, a talented person with the enough passion and skills can compete with anyone for this job; because learning in this position is a continuous cycle.
